Having adapted to driving on both sides has always made me curious as to what the underlying logic was for having 2 conventions. I might add there is a third one in Myanmar (Burma) in that based on a astrologer the original British influenced convention gave way to American style cars using British road rules. There was one more momentary edge case if one might call it that where Sweden adopted both conventions at the same time and switched over to the right at 3:00 pm
The design of these convention from the diktats of the french revolution when aristocracy was unfashionable on the roads (perhaps even dangerous) to a natural evolution from the design of the connestoga wagons and the size of roads makes good reading. The reasons, I assume are more practical it seems :)
